Some common stress reactions include:

  • Confusion
  • Fear
  • Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
  • Sleep problems
  • physical pain
  • anxiety
  • Anger
  • Grief
  • Shock
  • Aggressiveness
  • Withdrawal
  • Guilt
  • Shaken religious faith
  • Loss of confidence in self or others.

While Physical First Aid is used to alleviate physical pain caused by a bodily injury, Psychological First Aid is a tactic used to alleviate the uncomfortable range of emotions and behaviours experienced by persons who have been subjected to excessive stress.

The Purpose of Psychological First Aid

The goal of Psychological First Aid is to create and sustain an environment of:
1) Safety
2) Calm & Comfort
3) Connectedness
4) Self-Empowerment, and
5) Hope

Psychological First Aid covers fundamental requirements and alleviates psychological suffering by giving a loving, reassuring presence as well as instruction on common stress reactions. It empowers the person by building on their strengths and encourages them to use their existing coping abilities. It also connects people to natural support networks and refers them to professional assistance when necessary.

Psychological First Aid is a technique that everyone of us may utilise to lessen our stress levels. Understanding your stress reactions and applying Psychological First Aid concepts may help you improve resilience in yourself, your family, your profession, and your society.

What distinguishes PFA from counselling?

PFA is not a standard psychiatric or professional mental health therapy, but rather an approach for reducing stress reactions by offering additional assistance to persons impacted by a traumatic or emergency occurrence.

Is a degree required to use PFA?

No, Psychological First Aid doesn’t really rely on direct services provided by mental health specialists, but rather on abilities that the majority of us already possess.

Who requires PFA?

Everyone who has been exposed to a traumatic or emergency occurrence, including responders and support service providers, can benefit from Psychological First Aid. This includes children, adolescents, adults, seniors, families, and communities.

Is a separate PFA available for children?

The same fundamental core tactics of safety, quiet and comfort, connectivity, self-empowerment, and hope are used in Psychological First Aid for children and adolescents, but with adjustments to make them developmentally and age level appropriate.

PFA is used in what contexts?

Psychological First Aid is intended to be simple and practical, allowing it to be applied in a variety of settings. Psychological First Aid can be given to trauma survivors everywhere they are located, including shelters, schools, hospitals, private residences, the workplace, and community settings.

What should I do if someone need more assistance than I can provide?

When in doubt, seek advice! While the majority of individuals will heal on their own after a traumatic event, others may require more intense or professional support services. If you believe someone need more assistance than you are equipped to offer, consult with your supervisor or a mental health expert about how to effectively support the client or refer them to professional mental health services.
